LOI TV Commentator Kieran Burke looks ahead to the biggest game of the season in the League of Ireland Premier Division.
Shamrock Rovers v Bohemians Preview
The biggest game of the League of Ireland season so far, and arguably the most significant Dublin Derby for a generation, takes place at Tallaght Stadium on Monday night, as Shamrock Rovers hosts Bohemians live on Virgin Media Two (20:00 KO).

This rearranged fixture has been shrouded in controversy after the league’s decision to bring Shamrock Rovers’ most recent game forward by 24 hours, meaning the Hoops have had an extra rest day. Rovers’ comfortable 3-1 win against Drogheda United on Thursday was moved forward by a day in order to allow live TV coverage, as Bohemians’ FAI Cup semi-final against Waterford FC on Friday was already chalked up for TV coverage.
Controversies aside, Rovers blocked out the noise to cruise past a poor Drogheda side, while Bohemians were dumped out of the FAI Cup at home to a resurgent Waterford. Alan Reynolds’ decision to rest his star striker, Colm Whelan, for Friday’s game has come under intense scrutiny, as the Gypsies missed a glut of chances on the night.
As a result, the pressure is now on Reynolds to deliver a result against Bohemians’ arch rivals. Bohs will go level on points with the league leaders with a victory on Monday night. However, with just four games remaining, defeat here would likely rule Bohemians out of the title race and consign them to yet another trophyless season.
Shamrock Rovers have had recent wobbles of their own, particularly in Europe, but the Hoops looked reenergised following the international break when putting Drogheda to the sword on Thursday. The Tallaght men have the best home record in the division, and with their final three league games coming against teams in the lower half of the table, a win here would see Shamrock Rovers with one hand on the league title.
Stephen Bradley’s men have won the last two Dublin derbies against Bohemians, and they have also won the last two meetings here. While the Champions looked a lot more like themselves on Thursday, Drogheda were atrocious in the first half, and with Bohs knowing they have to make it up to their fans following the cup semi-final slip-up, this game will give us a much better indication of whether Rovers were simply in need of a break or whether the Drogheda game was a false reading.
There is every chance that Shamrock Rovers’ poor performances before the break were largely down to fatigue. Not only had the Hoops gone deep into European competition in each of the last two seasons, but of course, their captain Pico Lopes was at the World Cup this summer with Cape Verde. Lopes, in particular, looked off colour in recent months, with the physical and emotional toll of the summer perhaps catching up with the defender.
However, if there is any kind of doubt or hesitation in that Rovers defence on Monday, it will be pounced upon by a fresh Colm Whelan. The former UCD and Derry City striker looked destined for great things just a few years ago, but consecutive career-threatening knee injuries left Whelan flat on his back; he has picked himself back up off the canvas this season to score 13 league goals. Only his old UCD partner Tommy Lonergan has scored more league goals than Whelan this season.
Bohemians fired off 22 shots during Friday’s defeat to Waterford, with the Blues running out 0-2 winners despite recording just four shots on goal in ninety minutes. With the likes of Dawson Devoy and Ross Tierney firing on all cylinders this season, Whelan will have plenty of service coming his way at Tallaght on Monday.
Shamrock Rovers have registered just one clean sheet from their last 11 games, and backing Whelan to find the back of the net anytime looks the standout bet for this season-defining matchup.

Team News
Shamrock Rovers remain without long-term absentees Danny Grant, Danny Mandroiu, and Victor Ozhianvuna, while Cian Barrett and Enda Stevens are also likely to miss out.
Cian Byrne is suspended for Bohemians following his red card away to Dundalk in the Gypsies most recent league outing.
Predicted Lineups
Shamrock Rovers XI (Predicted): McGinty, Cleary, Lopes, Grace, Sobowale, Healy, Watts, Brennan, Byrne, Burke, McGovern.
Bohemians XI (Predicted): Walters, Power, Hickey, Todd, Mullen, Devoy, Flores, Tierney, Vaughan, Parson, Whelan.
Verdict
Bohemians’ season rests on this game; win, and they are genuine title contenders; lose, and their season is over. Having fluffed their lines in the cup semi-final, only a win will do for their supporters here. The Gypsies had been on a great run of form prior to the Waterford game. They’ve been free-scoring and have shown an ability to find different ways to win. For me, they look slightly overpriced at 9/4.
BEST BET: Colm Whelan anytime goalscorer (Price to follow)
