Monday Night Football comes from the CBS Arena, as Coventry hosts Newcastle.
Coventry v Newcastle Preview
Coventry City return to Premier League action on Monday night hoping to build on their first victory of the season, but Newcastle United will arrive at the CBS Arena looking to extend their encouraging start under new manager Matthias Jaissle.
Frank Lampard’s side ended a difficult opening run with a 1-0 win away to Nottingham Forest before the international break. However, their home form remains a major concern, with the Sky Blues losing all three of their matches at the CBS Arena this season across the Premier League and EFL Cup.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have collected eight points from their opening five league fixtures and appear to be finding their feet following Eddie Howe’s departure. Although Jaissle’s team have shown some defensive vulnerabilities, their greater attacking quality could prove decisive against a Coventry side still searching for consistency.
With the Magpies boasting an impressive recent record in this fixture, the visitors look capable of returning to Tyneside with all three points.

Can Coventry Finally Find Their Home Comforts?
It has been more than 25 years since Coventry last recorded a Premier League home victory, with their most recent success coming against Sunderland in April 2001. The fact that another north-east club is the opposition on Monday offers a curious historical footnote, but the current evidence suggests Lampard has plenty of work to do.
Coventry’s first home league outing of the campaign ended in a 1-0 defeat to Hull City, a particularly frustrating result against fellow promoted opposition. Things deteriorated further when Brighton arrived at the CBS Arena and inflicted a humiliating 5-0 loss on the Sky Blues.
Taiwo Awoniyi’s dismissal contributed to the damage against the Seagulls, but Coventry were already two goals behind when the forward was sent off. A subsequent 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa in the EFL Cup only reinforced concerns about their ability to compete with top-flight opposition on home soil.
Their victory at Nottingham Forest offered some welcome relief. Jay Dasilva’s goal secured a valuable three points, with goalkeeper Carl Rushworth’s long delivery helping create the decisive moment. However, Coventry struggled to create much else of note, meaning there are still questions over their attacking threat.
The absence of Haji Wright through injury is another concern. Coventry need greater cutting edge if they are to trouble Newcastle, particularly against a side with considerably more firepower at their disposal.
Lampard’s own record makes for uncomfortable reading. The Forest victory was only his second win in his last 22 Premier League games as a manager, while both successes came away from home. He has now gone ten consecutive Premier League home matches without a win, losing eight of them.
Coventry have also failed to score in either of their two home league fixtures this season. Another blank on Monday would leave them in danger of becoming just the sixth team in Premier League history to lose their first three home matches of a campaign without finding the net.
Newcastle Showing Signs of Progress Under Jaissle
Newcastle’s transition to life after Howe has not been entirely straightforward, but there are encouraging signs that Jaissle was the right appointment to take the club forward.
The Magpies have taken eight points from their first five Premier League games, winning twice and drawing twice alongside a single defeat. Their only league loss came against Leeds United, while draws against Liverpool and Bournemouth demonstrated their ability to compete with strong opposition.
Victories over Hull City and Tottenham have provided further encouragement, with Newcastle beginning to develop greater consistency despite the disruption caused by several summer arrivals and an early-season injury crisis.
The international break may have arrived at a useful time, giving the squad an opportunity to recover and allowing some injured players to return to contention. Newcastle should have more depth available as the campaign progresses, which could make them an increasingly difficult opponent.
There are, however, reasons for Coventry to believe they can cause problems. Newcastle had faced a league-high 97 shots before this round of fixtures, while they have managed just one clean sheet across their previous 13 league matches.
Their away form also requires improvement. Newcastle have won just one of their last six away league games, drawing one and losing four. That record suggests they are not yet a team to trust blindly on the road.
Nevertheless, the Magpies’ overall quality and recent results make them difficult to oppose against a Coventry side that has conceded nine goals across its three home matches this season.

Head-to-Head Record Favours Newcastle
Recent meetings between these sides have been dominated by Newcastle, who have won seven of the last eight league encounters, with Coventry managing just one victory.
The Magpies have also won their last two away league meetings with the Sky Blues. Another success would see Newcastle win three consecutive league matches at Coventry for the first time.
Lampard has enjoyed some success against Newcastle during his managerial career, winning three Premier League matches against them. Only Crystal Palace, against whom he has recorded five victories, have proved more familiar opponents for the former Chelsea midfielder to beat.
However, the current circumstances appear to favour the visitors. Newcastle have won four of their last six matches overall and four of their last six league games against promoted sides, while Coventry are still struggling to make their home advantage count.

Predicted Lineups
Coventry XI (Predicted): Rushworth; Mfuni, Thomas, Pinnock; Yirenkyi, Onyeka, Grimes, Dasilva; Rudoni, Mason-Clark; Thomas-Asante.
Newcastle XI (Predicted): Hornicek; Miley, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Gonzalez, Willock; Murphy, Fernandez-Pardo, Barnes; Wissa.
Verdict
Newcastle have enough attacking quality to exploit Coventry’s defensive weaknesses, while the hosts’ disappointing home performances make it difficult to justify backing them against a side that has made a promising start under Jaissle.
The visitors’ away record is a concern, and their lack of clean sheets suggests Coventry could still find opportunities. However, the Sky Blues’ struggles in front of goal and the absence of Wright leave them looking short of the attacking threat required to turn this into a statement victory.
Newcastle have also enjoyed the upper hand in recent meetings, winning seven of the last eight league encounters between the clubs.
