2026 Europa League Final Preview: Freiburg v Aston Villa – Team News, Form Guide, Players to Watch & Betting Tips

Freiburg v Aston Villa: Contrast in Experience Could Prove Key

Wednesday’s Europa League Final in Istanbul could signal the start of an English European clean sweep with Crystal Palace and Arsenal joining Aston Villa as UEFA finalists. While PSG are favourites to topple Arsenal in the showpiece game, both Aston Villa and Palace are hot favourites to win the second and third tier European trophies.

The Villans will face European finalist debutants Freiburg at Besiktas Park on Wednesday with Unai Emery aiming to secure a record extending fifth UEFA Cup/Europa League title as a manager.

Unai Emery is seeking a record extending fifth UEFA Cup/UEL title as a manager.

Freiburg boss Julian Schuster is set to become the youngest German manager to lead a team in a European final in 24 years, but Freiburg’s lack of experience on this stage extends beyond the dugout. This will be only the club’s second major final appearance, having fallen short in the 2021/22 DFB-Pokal final. They are also the first German side making their European final debut this century, with a maiden Champions League qualification awaiting if they can make history with victory here.

The Birmingham club have already secured a place in next season’s Champions League, meaning there is a sense of some pressure being lifted ahead of this final, although Villa’s players and fans will be desperate to end their thirty-year wait for a major trophy and to secure a first continental crown since 1982.

Premier League Financial Power Gives Aston Villa Major Edge

It’s not only the contrast in experience that gives Villa a major edge going into this final. SC Freiburg operates with an annual revenue of approximately €203 million and a player payroll budget estimated between €40-€45 million.

Aston Villa’s budget dwarfs SC Freiburg’s financial scale across all major categories, operating with roughly double the annual revenue and more than triple the player wage expenditures.

Boosted by lucrative Premier League TV rights and a recent Champions League run, Aston Villa’s accounts show record revenues that reach heights more than double what Freiburg generates.

Aston Villa’s weekly wage bill features multiple players earning more individually than Freiburg’s top several stars combined. Villa spent heavily to break into the elite. Villa’s squad valuation is nearly triple that of Freiburg.

Freiburg fielded seven German players in their starting XI against Leipzig at the weekend, while Villa had just three English players start Friday’s impressive 4-2 win at home to Liverpool.

Freiburg can not finish any higher than seventh in the Bundesliga, while Villa can not finish any lower than fifth in the Premier League. Villa finished joint-top of the Europa League league phase with seven wins from eight matches, while Freiburg finished four points worse off in seventh. Every metric favours the English side.

Freiburg vs Aston Villa Form Guide

The German side secured European football for next season with an impressive 4-1 win at home to RB Leipzig last time out, but that is one of only two victories in their last seven matches across all competitions.

Villa hit a rocky patch towards the end of last month, losing three on the spin, but they’ve bounved back with emphatic wins against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, although they did drop points in between against Burnley.

Across their last 10 games in all competitions, Villa have won five, drawn two, and lost three.

Head-to-Head: Freiburg vs Aston Villa Record

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides. However, Freiburg have struggled against English opposition, winning just one of their four previous meetings (L3). Aston Villa, meanwhile, overcame two German clubs en route last season and haven’t lost to Bundesliga opposition since the 2008/09 campaign. History also favours the Premier League side, with English clubs winning eight of the last ten major European finals contested against German opponents.

2026 Europa League Final Team News

With Amadou Onana still a major doubt after limping off in the first leg of the semi-final at Nottingham and not featuring since, Unai Emery may once again turn to Victor Lindelof in a makeshift midfield role for Wednesday’s final.

However, Lindelof himself was forced off on Friday with a foot issue, potentially leaving Douglas Luiz or Lamare Bogarde to step in. Ross Barkley is unavailable due to ineligibility, while Boubacar Kamara remains out for the season through injury.

Yuito Suzuki, Patrick Osterhage, and Daniel-Kofi Kyereh are all set to miss out through injury for Freiburg.

Key Players to Watch: Europa League Final 2026

Few players have been as influential in this season’s Europa League as Freiburg talisman Vincenzo Grifo, whose nine goal involvements (five goals, four assists) are the joint-most in the competition. The Italian has either scored or assisted in each of his last five UEL appearances (G3, A3).

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, meanwhile, heads into the final in red-hot form after contributing six goals in his last three matches (four goals, two assists). All five of his Europa League goals this season have come during the knockout rounds, with three of them opening the scoring.

Emi Buendia has also been a key creative force for Villa, contributing to eight goals across just 11 Europa League starts this season. Morgan Rogers, meanwhile, has been one of the competition’s standout performers, leading the way for both chances created (27) and touches inside the opposition penalty area (65).

36-year-old defensive midfielder Nicolas Hofler is set for an emotional farewell, having made his 293rd and final league appearance for Freiburg just days ago.

Stats, Trends & Europa League Final Prediction

There has to be a real fear setting in with UEFA that English clubs could utterly dominate the Europa and Conference League in the coming years. For all the talk about a “Super League” in recent years, the Premier League has broken away from it’s European counterparts in recent years and is utterly dwarfing every other league when it comes to revenue and pulling power.

Aston Villa are essentially a Champions League team playing in a division below, they will have far too much firepower for a Freiburg team who have never been on this kind of stage before.

Scotland’s John McGinn Could Shine

While many punters will be looking towards the likes of Watkins and Morgan Rogers in terms of potential goalscorers, one player who has been central to the rise of Aston Villa in recent seasons is John McGinn. The 31-year-old, who is heading to the World Cup this summer with Scotland, is often overlooked by many, but he is a top-class midfielder and has scored 5 goals in 11 Europa League matches this season.

He’s also scored five Premier League goals and is a threat from outside the area and makes plenty of appeal as an anytime goalscorer.

McGinn scored a beauty on Friday against Liverpool.

Goals, Trends & Betting Angles

With both teams to score clicking in Freiburg’s last five matches and in three of Aston Villa’s last four games, hopefully we at least get an entertaining final with a few goals in it. There are plenty of trends to suggest that we might.

  • Both teams have found the net in eight of Freiburg’s last nine matches.
  • Freiburg have scored in both halves in each of their last three matches.
  • Seven of Aston Villa’s last ten competitive matches have featured over 2.5 goals.
