The traditional curtain-raiser to the new Premier League season sees champions Arsenal take on FA Cup winners Manchester City at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

These two clubs have dominated English football in recent years, finishing first and second in the Premier League in four of the last five seasons. Arsenal finally ended their long wait for another league title last season, lifting their first Premier League crown since the famous Invincibles campaign of 2003-04 after three successive runner-up finishes.
The big question now is whether Mikel Arteta’s side can back it up.
City, meanwhile, begin a new era under Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure after a remarkable decade in charge. Guardiola leaves behind six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, a Champions League and a host of other honours, but Maresca knows the club well after serving as assistant during City’s treble-winning 2022-23 campaign.
The Premier League season begins on Friday, August 21, with Arsenal hosting Coventry at 20:00.

Arsenal were linked with several high-profile names following the World Cup, including Vinicius Jr, Julian Alvarez, Bradley Barcola and Morgan Rogers. While the Gunners didn’t reel in any of those big names, they have captured Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães.

Injury News
With players returning at different stages after World Cup duty, both managers are still managing workloads ahead of the new campaign.
Arsenal’s biggest concern is William Saliba, who faces an extended spell out with a back injury. Jurrien Timber remains weeks away with a groin problem, while Ben White is closing in on a return after a knee injury suffered in May. There is better news elsewhere, with Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and David Raya all back in training.
City have far fewer fitness concerns, with Rodri’s back issue their only major injury headache heading into Wembley. The Spanish midfielder is also the subject of major transfer interest from Barcelona at present.

City have held the upper hand in this fixture for much of the last decade. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, they have won 18 of the 27 meetings between the sides in all competitions, while Arsenal have managed just four victories.
That said, the gap has narrowed in recent meetings. Four of the last eight encounters have finished level after 90 minutes, and Arsenal have claimed two wins during that run, suggesting these fixtures are no longer quite as one-sided as they once were.
Verdict
Arsenal will take enormous confidence from finally getting over the line in the title race, but the absence of Saliba is a significant blow and their defensive options are not yet at full strength. Several key players also had disrupted pre-season schedules after their World Cup commitments.
City finished last season strongly despite the uncertainty surrounding Guardiola’s departure, winning 18 of their final 26 matches in all competitions and losing just once in their last 16 league outings.
The likely departures of Rodri and Bernardo Silva (confirmed) leave obvious holes to fill, but City’s attacking quality remains formidable. Phil Foden has the chance to bounce back after an underwhelming campaign, while Erling Haaland remains the standout threat. The Norwegian has scored 112 Premier League goals in just 132 appearances and added seven more during this summer’s World Cup, even if he is still waiting for his first Community Shield goal.
Trends pointing to penalties?
Recent history also points towards another competitive contest. Six of the last nine Community Shields have gone to penalties, no final has finished 0-0 after 90 minutes since 1991, and at least two goals have been scored in normal time in 15 of the last 17 editions.
City’s superior record in this fixture, combined with Arsenal’s defensive absences, just gives them the edge.
