Overview

A repeat of the 2025 final where the home side triumphed on a scoreline of 32-7. Leinster dominated the first half and led 19-0 at half-time, tries from Jack Conan, Jordie Barrett and Josh Van Der Flier paved the way and in the second half Fintan Gunne found the whitewash late on. The victory for Leinster last year was there first since 2021 and the Bulls have been in three finals in the last four years without success.

Leinster

Inconsistent handling from Leinster has led to mistakes this season and they went into a European Rugby Champions Cup Final against Bordeaux full of hope. They were simply dismantled early on in that game and couldn’t recover. Tommy O’Brien went over on the sixth minute and with Leinster fans jubilant in the stands it looked like a change of fortune was on the way. The jubilation quickly turned to despair as Maxime Lucu, Paolo Uberti and a Louis Bielle-Biarrey brace quickly turned the game on its head.

Injuries have also plagued Leinster this season and the news in the last few days was that prop Andrew Porter will miss the game will come as another blow. Captain Caelan Doris and Dan Sheehan need to be assessed ahead of Friday evenings showpiece at Croke Park.

Leinster have racked up some big scores in the URC this year and undoubtably arrive at this game with the favourites tag firmly around their neck. 59-10 win over Lions in the quarter final was an exhibition of pace and power and quick moving off the back of the ruck. A 20-11 win over the Stormers in the semi-final was more grit and determination rather than running rugby but they got the job done.

Sam Prendergast & Harry Byrne will no doubt battle it out for the ten jersey once again and there will be plenty of emotion around the capital on Friday evening as James Lowe dons the blue jersey for the final time after nine years with Leinster. He joined in 2017 and has a club record 71 tries in 101 appearances.

Vodacom Bulls

With a staggering level of test level talent among both squads it is quite interesting that the Bulls named eleven springboks in the starting fifteen that faced Glasgow Warriors in the semi-final. Willie le Roux, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Canan Moodie, Marco van Staden, and Handré Pollard were all part of South Africa’s World Cup title win in 2023.

Kurt-Lee Arendse has found the whitewash on three occasions in the URC this season and his finish against Munster was top notch and his trickery on the wing could cause Leinster a lot of trouble. He didn’t play in last years final and that was the spark that the Bulls were missing.

What Kurt-Lee Arendse can do if Leinster give him space.

Legendary Springbok forward Victor Matfield has said of late that while Leinster deserve to be favourites they have struggled with teams who like to get physical with them.

“If you think about that (Champions Cup) final with Bordeaux, the forwards just dominated them up front. If the Bulls want to win, the scrum is going to be so important, but I would like to see the Bulls go to their maul as well. They haven’t used their maul quite often, only five metres away.”

He also mentioned that a lot of pressure will be on Willie Le Roux to have a big game and put the disappointment of last year behind him. In terms of a Jacques Nienaber defence Le Roux has trained against that and potentially crosskicks could be very important.

In terms of URC results for the Bulls they beat Zebre 54-19, Benetton 45-19, Munster 45-14 and then the comeback of all comebacks to nab Glasgow 22-21. Handre Pollard was unsuccessful with three penalties in a row which kept the gap at one with seven minutes to play. Glasgow tried but couldn’t get over the line and the Bulls hung on.

Verdict

The emotion that surrounds this game in terms of James Lowe could have an impact on the Leinster performance but they will be hoping to get out of the blocks early and register on the scoreboard. The injury assessments will also be key to see who the home side have available but they have enough across the field to yield back to back titles in the URC.

Prediction: Leinster 34-24 Bulls

Best Bet: Leinster Winning Margin 6-10 (4/1)

First Tryscorer: James Lowe
