Shane Keegan Reacts to Daly Departure
Former League of manager Shane Keegan admits he feels sympathy for Jon Daly after the former Rangers striker became the first managerial casualty of the season. Daly parted ways with Waterford FC following Friday’s 1-0 defeat against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium, a result which saw the Blues winless start to the campaign stretch to 13 matches.
Keegan, a former manager in the league with clubs such as Galway United and Cobh Ramblers, pointed towards the postponement of Waterford’s recent home game against Drogheda United as an unfortunate turning point that went against Daly.
“I’ve been in Jon Daly’s shoes, when the bullet comes and you’re ousted from a job you look at different turning points within your season, and I think the home game against Drogheda United getting pulled because of the bad weather was a real kick in the stomach.”
“They (Waterford FC) had back-to-back draws against Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne, two excellent results, and were heading into that game thinking there’s a momentum swing now and I really fancied them to go and get three points, that game fell by the wayside, momentum was lost and they’ve never shown a huge amount of life since then”, said Keegan on this week’s episode of League of Ireland Lowdown.
With rumours circulating regarding the clubs future under the ownership of English league club Fleetwood, Keegan felt that filling the hotseat at the RSC may prove to be a difficult task. However, on Wednesday, Waterford moved to appoint Graham Coughlan as the clubs new Head Coach until the end of the season.
A former Bristol Rovers and Mansfield Town manager, Coughlan kept Boston in the National League a couple of seasons ago in what was described as a “miracle.”
Looks like he’ll need to work his magic once more at the RSC with Waterford currently 11 points adrift of guaranteed safety in the Premier Division.
