Premier League Permutations 2025/26: Title Race, Champions League Battle & Relegation Scenarios Explained

The 2025/26 Premier League Season Concludes on Sunday, 24 May

The 2025/26 Premier League season is heading for a dramatic finale, with the race for European qualification places and the relegation battle all still alive heading into the closing days of the campaign.

Despite Arsenal already claiming the title, there is still plenty to be decided before the curtain comes down on another unforgettable Premier League season.

Champions League Race: Who Qualifies?

The Premier League has secured an additional Champions League qualification spot for next season thanks to UEFA’s coefficient rankings.

That means the top five teams will qualify for Europe’s elite competition in 2026/27. A sixth team will also qualify for Europe’s elite competition if Aston Villa finish fifth, after the Villains won the Europa League earlier this week.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Aston Villa have all confirmed their place among Europe’s elite.

However, the race for the remaining Champions League spot will go down to the wire after Bournemouth defeated Manchester City on Tuesday. The Cherries are just three points behind Liverpool and go to Nottingham Forest on Sunday, while Arne Slot’s side host Brentford.

Even if Bournemouth were to win at the City Ground, they’d need to win by a sizeable margin and hope Liverpool suffer a hefty defeat as the Reds are six goals better off on goal difference.

However, a sixth-place finish WILL be enough for Champions League qualification should Aston Villa win the Europa League and finish outside the top four. Liverpool are the only team who can leapfrog Villa with a win on the final day and an Aston Villa loss away to Manchester City.

With that in mind, Brighton could leapfrog Bournemouth on the final day if they beat Manchester United and Andoni Iraola’s side lose.

European Qualification Breakdown

  • Top five – Champions League qualification (Top six if Aston Villa win the UEL & finish outside top four)
  • Sixth and seventh – Europa League qualification (If six teams qualify for the UCL, only seventh will qualify for the UEL).
  • Eighth – UEFA Conference League qualification

Manchester City’s FA Cup success means the Europa League place normally reserved for the cup winners is likely to pass down through the league standings instead.

There are also extra permutations involving Aston Villa and Crystal Palace depending on the outcomes of European finals later this month.

Brighton, Brentford, Sunderland, and Chelsea are just some of the teams who could still qualify for Europe.

Crystal Palace will qualify for next season’s Europa League if they beat Rayo Vallecano in next week’s Conference League final.

Tottenham Facing Unthinkable Relegation Battle

One of the biggest stories of the season has been Tottenham’s collapse towards the bottom of the table.

Spurs are locked in a desperate fight with West Ham to avoid the final relegation spot after already-doomed Burnley and Wolves were confirmed for the drop weeks ago.

Thanks to their superior goal difference, Spurs realistically only need one more point to preserve their Premier League status.

Tottenham hosts Everton on Sunday, while West Ham entertains Leeds United on what will be a drama filled afternoon in the English capital. West Ham can only survive by way of a win against Leeds and a Tottenham defeat.

Which Teams Have Already Been Relegated?

Two clubs have already had their relegation confirmed:

  • Burnley
  • Wolves

Who Has Been Promoted To The Premier League?

Coventry City and Ipswich Town have already secured automatic promotion to the Premier League for next season.

The final promotion place will be determined via the Championship play-off final, where Hull City and Middlesbrough are set to battle it out at Wembley after Southampton were sensationally booted out after being caught spying on the Boro.
