Leinster Preview
Leinster, who have been quite in and out this season in the URC, have moved comfortably into a sixth successive European semi-final at home to Toulon on Saturday, May 2.
One of the main issues surrounding Leinster this season is the big question of who is the better player at ten. Harry Byrne has the call at the moment, but Sam Prendergast produced a man of the match performance in the URC against Ulster, and that will no doubt leave Leo Cullen with thinking to do.
Assistant coach Jacques Nienaber spoke in the last week to say that Leinster need to kill games off more clinically, like against Ulster, where they let them back into the game, “I thought maybe we took our foot off their throats a bit, so yeah this is stuff we need to fix moving forward, we weren’t clinical enough”.
Leinster showed some of the issues that have been slowing them down in terms of consistency in the opening half of the quarter-final v Sale Sharks, when they led 7-3 at half-time. Tries from Hugo Keenan, Ryan Baird, Rieko Ioane, Tommy O’Brien, and Jamie Osborne solidified things in the second half, and Harry Byrne proved his worth in the ten jersey by converting four out of the five tries.
Sale couldn’t cope with Leinster in the second half, and Leinster, who recently won a provincial derby against Ulster, will be looking to bring that form and more into this game.
Leinster made plenty of mistakes in the previous round win over Edinburgh, where it was 28-26 at half time, and again Leinster dominated in the second half to win the game 49-31.
Leinster have lost four Champions Cup finals since their fourth European title in 2018 and will be hoping for an error-free semi-final to let them set their sights on Bilbao on Saturday, May 23.
Toulon Preview
In terms of their opponents, Toulon, they are quite a dangerous side to underestimate when they have the likes of Charles Ollivon playing at seven and the pace of Gael Drean, who has scored seven tries in the Champions Cup this season on the wing.
Nacho Brex and Melvyn Jaminet also have a lot of creativity when they get their hands on the ball, and with Ben White at nine and Tomas Albornoz at fly half, they could cause Leinster an issue or two early on.
Three of Toulon’s last four European games have been narrow wins, suggesting they may look to keep this contest tight and low-scoring.
Toulon’s Last Three Results
- 27-25 vs Munster
- 28-27 vs Stormers
- 22-19 vs Glasgow Warriors
Verdict
You would expect Leinster to have the stronger bench, and when it comes to the latter stages of the game they just might have enough to get them across the line.
The likes of Ronan Kelleher, Max Deegan, Ciaran Frawley, and Robbie Henshaw were on the bench against Sale, and they could be pivotal if Leinster need to call on international experience from the bench.
Prediction
Leinster 31-18 Toulon
