Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina, 20:00, RTE 2/BBC One

Canada will be bidding to follow up on co-hosts Mexico’s flying start when the Maples welcome Bosnia & Herzegovina to Toronto for the opening game in Group B.

Managed by former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, Canada signed off on their tournament preparations by playing out a 1-1 draw with Ireland in Montreal last weekend.

Despite utterly dominating the first half of that game, it took Canada a Jake O’Brien own-goal to open the scoring, before a spirited second-half display from the visitors saw the game end in a tie. In fact, Ireland ended the game the stronger and could have won it only for a fabulous save from Maxime Crepeau, denying Mason Melia a first-ever international goal.

Struggles in front of goal are not new for Canada; three of their last 10 games have ended scoreless, while they only beat Wales and Guatemala by the odd goal in the lead-up to the World Cup.

Bosnia proved that they can be a dangerous dance partner for Canada by eliminating Italy in the play-offs to qualify for this competition.

Still going strong at the age of 40, Edin Dzeko goes into the tournament fresh from helping Schalke to promotion in Germany. Dzeko made his international debut in 2007, and now holds the records for the most appearances (148) and most goals (73) for Bosnia. His experience and physical presence could cause issues for the Canadian defence.

Canada finished bottom of their group in Qatar four years ago and look no sure things to pick up all three points here.

Prediction: Canada 1-1 Bosnia (9/2)

Best Bet: Bosnia Double Chance (17/20)

USA v Paraguay, Sat 02:00, RTE 2/BBC One

The USA begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against Paraguay at the Los Angeles Stadium. Having come through the group stage unbeaten four years ago, American hopes will be high on home soil.

Paraguay return to football’s biggest stage for the first time since 2010 after an impressive CONMEBOL qualifying campaign, finishing level on points with Colombia, Uruguay and Brazil while also recording the second-best defensive record in South American qualifying.

Victories over Brazil and World Champions Argentina prove that the South American’s will be no pushover in this Group D opener.

Paraguay’s good run of form, which includes three wins in their last four matches, has been built on defensive solidity. However, they don’t score many with an average of 0.78 goals per game during the qualifiers, the joint-lowest of any side to reach these finals.

The US arrive into their tournament opener on a bad run, losing three of their last four but manager Mauricio Pochettino has been keen to test his side against the best with friendlies against Belgium, Portugal, Senegal and Germany held before this match.

The stars & stripes have won their last three meetings with Paraguay, including a 2-1 friendly win last year, and five of their seven meetings overall. As a result, this looks a decent opening for the States to get off to a flyer.

Prediction: USA 2-1 Paraguay (13/2)

Best Bet: USA (21/20)

2026 FIFA World Cup Day Two Double
