FULHAM v NEWCASTLE MATCH PREVIEW

Let’s talk xG figures after nine matches played by each team this season in the Premier League.

The xG figures tell us that Crystal Palace are currently the worst team in the Premier League based on xGA (expected goals against) compared to xG (expected goals scored), the numbers being 1.13 and 2.08.

Newcastle‘s comparison doesn’t make for good reading, 1.35 to 1.80, whilst Sunderland’s position at the foot of the table confounds the stats, 1.40 to 1.49, even after their comprehensive defeat to Coventry last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Fulham, who face Newcastle on Saturday at 3pm, sit in sixth place in the xG table with figures of 1.64 to 1.52.

Interestingly, Man Utd’s numbers suggest that now is not the time to sack Michael Carrick, as they stand at the top of the table with numbers of 1.94 to 1.43.

Second in the table are Tottenham Hotspur, 1.84 to 1.26, followed by Man City, 1.80 to 1.14, then Brighton, 1.77 to 1.31, and Liverpool, 1.69 to 1.31.

Current league leaders Arsenal are in eleventh spot with 1.52 to 1.19.

Of course, one has then to look at xG compared to what has actually happened, which produces a minus figure of 0.83 for Man Utd but positive figures of 0.42 for Man City, 0.90 for Brighton, 0.49 for Chelsea, 0.04 for Arsenal, 0.27 for Brentford and, interestingly, 0.28 for Ipswich and 0.06 for Hull. Fulham’s is minus 0.64.

Stats, of course, don’t tell the whole story and don’t account for the moods setting into teams based on whether they are winning or losing. Winning, as is often said, breeds confidence, regardless of stats.

Make of this what you will, but there is no doubt that Newcastle, who would have moved up to seventh in the table had they beaten Everton on Monday – they lost 1-0 and, in turn, Everton moved up to seventh – find themselves in thirteenth spot and looking down rather than up.

Another crisis could yet be looming for the Magpies, whose fans were rather subdued on Monday.  Worryingly for head coach Matthias Jaissle is that, apparently, his team failed to carry out his tactical instructions, with late handwritten instructions found discarded on the pitch by eagle-eyed fans and journalists. As ever, players have a quick chance to put things right.

FULHAM v NEWCASTLE CURRENT FORM

Fulham

After losing their first three league matches of the campaign, Fulham have very much steadied the ship, with two wins and a draw in their last three. They have kept a clean sheet in each of their wins, and the draw, 1-1, came away at Aston Villa. Only two of their last six matches have been played at home but they will stride out at Craven Cottage on Saturday with rediscovered confidence.

Newcastle

The Geordies have now lost five of their last seven matches in all competitions. Away from home in the league this season, they have beaten Spurs (2-0), lost to Leeds (4-1), lost to Coventry (4-1) and beaten Crystal Palace (2-0), so they will be looking to maintain their 100% record in London.

They have kept just two clean sheets in their nine league matches this season, and have failed to score in just two of them, with these failures coming at home. Three players haves scored more than one goal for them in the Premier League this season, which are Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock. with two each.

After missing five games, Elanga returned to the starting line-up in Monday night’s defeat to Everton so should, in racing parlance, strip fitter for the outing.

FULHAM v NEWCASTLE H2H RECORD

These sides have been back in the Premier League at the same time ever since the 2018-19 season. The scores during this time, with Fulham at home, have been (most recent game first): 2-0, 3-1, 0-1, 1-4, 0-2 and 0-4.

Based on the stats, Newcastle should travel with a fair degree of hope.

Home and away, there has not been a drawn match between these sides for 11 games (nine in the league, plus 2 Cup ties). In six of the 11 games, one side failed to score. In just two of the games, Fulham have scored more than one goal. Newcastle have scored more than one goal on six occasions.

FULHAM v NEWCASTLE PLAYERS TO WATCH

The return from injury of Anthony Elanga against Everton on Monday can only be a positive for Newcastle. He has scored two goals in four starts this season.

FULHAM v NEWCASTLE PREDICTION & BETTING TIPS

Fulham have hardly been prolific this season, for all that their form has picked up recently.

For all the negativity surrounding Newcastle, they have a good record in this fixture and, also, have won on all four visits to London this season (3 in the league, one in the EFL Cup).
