Curragh Preview Friday 25th June 2021

It is Irish Derby weekend The Curragh, the three-day fixture beginning on Friday

Alan Marron is back to preview Day One of the Irish Derby Weekend at The Curragh.

Folks, we are back with another preview, this time around it is Irish Derby weekend from The Curragh and Fridays card looks like an excellent opportunity for a winner or two. The Apprentice Derby is the feature on the night along with some very competitive handicaps and some very informative maidens.

Scroll down and check out my selections and hopefully we can get a winner on the board.

4.30 IRISH STALLION FARMS EBF MAIDEN (2yo) Winner €9,735 11 runners 6f Good RTV (STALLS Centre)

The opening race on Irish Derby weekend looks like a very informative maiden and one of the most interesting runners for me is the Paddy Twomey trained GLENGARRA.

This colt made his debut behind the Acropolis at Listowel but he was very green throughout and looked like he would come on plenty for the run.

He finished a modest fourth but was very green throughout and I think we will see a much better performance this time around.

Race experience can mean plenty and I think he looks to be a solid each-way proposition here.

Some fantastic pedigrees on show here but much like the first race I think that race experience will count for plenty and I will be siding with the Shane Foley ridden DISCOVERIES.

This filly is a full sister to stable star Alpha Centauri and a half sister to Alpine Star. She learned on the job on debut at Leopardstown but came home strongly to finish fourth behind the Ger Lyons trained Juncture.

She done her best work in the closing stages and if she can improve off the back of that then she will take plenty of beating this time around.

Jessica Harrington is a master with juveniles and this will be the nap of the day for me.

5.30 BRADY FAMILY SUPPORTING BARRETSTOWN HANDICAP (3yo+ 60-90) Winner €9,145 27 runners 7f Good RTV

Ken Condon and Joey Sheridan team up here with ICE COLD IN ALEX and this horse looks nicely handicapped based on form shown when 4th in the Irish Cambridgeshire back in 2019.

He was rated 84 on that occasion and is now down to a very appealing mark of 78. Joey will take five pounds off his back and that leaves him a very solid betting proposition in what looks a tricky handicap. He has just found form at the right time having run a very promising race when fourth to Sasvana at Leopardstown last time out doing all his best work late on.

This horse needs plenty of luck in running as he will be dropped in and looked to be delivered late. If he can get the luck that he needs then keep an eye out for him finishing late and fast.

I am surprised that he is such a big price. Should be hard to keep out of the frame.

6.00 BORD NA MONA RECYCLING APPRENTICE DERBY (3yo+) Winner €12,390 20 runners 1m4f Good RTV

The feature of the night for the apprentices as they look to get some “Derby” success.

Willie Byrne looks to have picked up a very decent mount aboard LOINGSEIOR as this horse is looking for three wins on the bounce.

Annalise Cullen was on board for the previous two victories but will ride Kasparenko for her dad this time around. Loingseoir has been really impressive in recent starts and will need to improve again to justify a 13lb hike in the ratings but I think that is far from insurmountable.

I think that this horse was worth more value than the winning margin suggested last time out.

He is on a roll and should improve again, I think he will be very hard to keep out of the placings.

6.35 IRISH STALLION FARMS EBF MAIDEN (3yo+) Winner €8,850 11 runners 1m2f Good RTV

Ryan Moore will be looking to make his visit to the Curragh worthwhile over the weekend and he could get a winner on the board here with INTERPRETATION who ran a race full of promise on debut back in November behind his stablemate Cleveland.

He looked very green early on and dropped out before the penny dropped and he ran on strongly close home.

It was a very eyecatching run and there is no doubt that we will see a much better performance on better ground this time. The application of cheekpieces should help him concentrate and get on with the job in hand.

He will take a world of beating here.

7.10 TRI EQUESTRIAN HANDICAP (4yo+) Winner €12,390 15 runners 1m2f Good RTV

Henry De Bromhead has had a fantastic season on the level and over obstacles this season with his runners and he teams up here with Billy Lee and a very interesting recruit in CAPE ISLAY.

This mare was formerly trained by Mark Johnston across the water and had contested some decent races off higher marks than he will race off this time around.

She really impressed me at Limerick last time out when she got the better of Shamad by an ever widening 2 ¼ lengths going away. She was raised seven pounds for that win but I think there should be more to come.

She was a winner at Chester off a mark of 82 back in 2019 so she should have more to give.

Solid each way chance in a very competitive race.

7.45 HOLDEN PLANT RENTALS HANDICAP (3yo+ 50-75) Winner €6,490 24 runners 1m1f Good RTV

The master of Rosewell House Dermot Weld has a very interesting filly entered here from the foot of the weights and LYRA BELACQUA could go very close off a nice light weight with Sam Ewing on board.

This filly really caught my eye last time at Leopardstown when she was fifth behind the Ger Lyons trained Blazing Star. She was short of room under 2f out and was then switched left but she ran on nicely to suggest that it wouldn’t be long before she broke her maiden tag.

It looks really interesting that she is pitched into handicap company straight away and if she can improve off her last run then I would expect her to be involved at the finish.

Should go close.
