Galway Festival Day Three Preview

It's Galway Plate day at Galway Races, one of the feature races of the meeting

Alan Marron is back to preview Day Three of the Galway Festival which features the Galway Plate.

We are at Day Three which features the very famous Galway Plate. It is an extremely competitive race this year like always but as you will read below, an old favourite of mine is back for another crack at the race. We got another winner on the board on Tuesday with the Colin Keane ridden Out On Friday (10/3) making all and finally getting that deserved handicap victory.

Make sure ye call into your local Bar One Racing shop throughout the week where you can catch all the action live and check out the offers and specials that are available for the Galway Festival.

4.45 PLAY THE TOTE JACKPOT NOVICE HURDLE (LISTED RACE)

GETAWAY GORGEOUS was very consistent last season in both bumpers and over obstacles and she returns here on better ground and could be very hard to beat.

Her second place finish behind Barrington Court is very strong form in terms of this race and it should be more than enough to see her get her head in front.

Most of her runs have been on bad ground so the better ground could see a completely different mare this time around. Barrington Court has franked the form this season already by winning very nicely.

Willie Mullins will be looking for a good performance here and will be extremely hard to beat with luck in running.

Can Getaway Gorgeous produce a scintillating performance for the master of Closutton?

5.15 IRISH STALLION FARMS EBF MARES HANDICAP HURDLE

One of the most interesting runners on the card today is TARA DYLAN, who was a very solid second behind Mondays feature winner Princess Zoe in the Ladies Derby at the Curragh.

That form has been franked even more by Walking On Glass who got up to win nicely on Tuesday evening.

She goes back over hurdles here and is nicely handicapped on the back of that. She runs here off a mark of 109 and was an excellent fourth at Listowel last season off a mark of 124. If she can reproduce that run or something close to it then she is solid each way value.

The ground should be no issue and with the yard among the winners this week I can see a solid run coming this time around.

5.45 BET WITH TOTE ON THE GALWAY RACES MAIDEN HURDLE

TALK OF THE TOWN was a very convincing winner of a Kilbeggan bumper last time out for the Gordon Elliott team and it is very interesting that he goes straight over hurdles for his next run.

His stablemate Geraldo was all the rage that night but Talk Of The Town travelled well and quickened up nicely when asked to go and win his race. He is the type to improve off the back of that run and could be a name to follow for later in the season if he is successful here.

Kilbeggan is a similar track to Galway and if he can get into a rhythm and jump well he could take plenty of beating.

6.15 PLAY THE TOTE TRIFECTA HANDICAP HURDLE

Barry Connell is having his first runners as a trainer at Galway this year and his runner here DEVILS GLEN could be slightly overpriced for the form he has shown so far in his lightly raced career.

He was very impressive in his maiden hurdle victory at Tipperary back in May 2018 and obviously had has problems since. He really caught the eye the last time we seen him when he was sixth at Gowran Park in a heavy ground handicap hurdle.

He could be the type of horse who could be best caught fresh and on better ground and while the Emmet Mullins trained Pilbara will take plenty of beating I think Devils Glen could outrun his price and go very close.

Keep a close eye on the market as he could be shorter before the off.

6.45 TOTE GALWAY PLATE (HANDICAP CHASE)

One of the features of the week and likely one of the races that is synonymously associated with the Galway Festival. When I started following the Galway Festival, Ansar trained by Dermot Weld in the colours of Kay Devlin was the horse I always remember storming up the hill to the cheers of the crowd.

This years race looks extremely competitive as normal but an old favourite simply cant be bypassed in this race after a prominent showing last year. PEREGRINE RUN was fourth in the race last year and is only a pound higher this time around.

His preparation this season has been absolutely perfect. Two nice runs on the flat and an impressive victory at Killarney in between. His ability to handle the track and ground is a massive plus for this horse and he deserves nothing more than to write his name in Galway Plate folklore with victory in this famous race.

He likes to be up close to the pace and touch wood his jumping has got better.

With luck in running I expect him to go very close this year and should be bang in contention as they turn for home.

7.15 TOTE PROUD SPONSORS OF THE GALWAY RACES HANDICAP CHASE

Shark Hanlon is no stranger to a big race success and looks to have a solid chance here with his crack hunter chaser REWRITETHERULES.

He was a massive eye catcher behind Poseidon over hurdles at Limerick under Bryan Cooper and followed that up with a fourth behind Barrington Court who runs earlier on today’s card.

Both hurdles runs look to me as if they were prep runs with this race in mind and he is one that I would be keeping a close eye on in the market.

He is very unexposed over regulation fences and could be one to be on the right side of. He was pulled up in the Foxhunters at Cheltenham last season but this race looks perfect for him and he stays further so the stiff finish should be right up his street.

Will be very hard to keep out of the frame.

7.45 IRISH STALLION FARMS EBF MARES NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE

With very little form to go on here I am taking a bit of a shot in the dark with SHEER LISS trained by Paul Cashman.

There is bumper form on her dams side being by Liss Na Tintri who was successful in a bumper for John Kiely. This mare had some moderate point to point form but she was a creditable second behind Kilbree Warrior at Tallow with the third placed Emma Prada winning next time out. She will be a very big price and a small stake each way is advised here.

She could improve for the better ground and run on and snatch a place.

8.15 TOTE SUPPORTING IRISH RACING SINCE 1930 INH FLAT RACE

We have another bumper to finish the card and again there isn’t much form to go by. Jessica Harrington has her team in cracking form and her four year old filly MIGHTY MEGGSIE could run very well with Finian Maguire on board.

This filly is closely related to one of the yards decent performers Burn and Turn and half sister to useful hurdle winner Opposites Attract. She should like the ground being by Arakan and it wouldn’t surprise me if she is bang there at the finish.

Will be hard to keep out of the frame.

Jessica Harrington looks to have a solid chance with Mighty Meggsie in the last on the card. Will it be another winner for Finny Maguire?
