LISTOWEL PREVIEW THURSDAY 12-9-2019
1.55 1m Tote Ireland Irish EBF Median Auction Maiden (Plus 10 Race) (2yo)
This is a race not to get overly involved in as the Aidan O’Brien trained Santiago looks to have a very strong form chance and should be hard to beat. SPIRITUAL SON has progressed steadily in each of his two runs and could be the one to give the favourite most to do here. He ran a nice race when finishing fourth at Bellewstown last time out where the second horse that day Franklin Street cane out and won the nursery at the course on Tuesday. Each way value at the prices.
2.30 1m Byrne Family Handicap (3yo+)
SEGENHOE looks a very interesting runner here for the John Murphy team with Colin Keane aboard for handicap debut. The form of his last run in a maiden at Killarney has a very strong look to it with Clockers Corner who finished third that day has come out and won since. Segenhoe has been prominent in most of his races to date and is drawn one and is primed to attack. A handicap mark of 72 looks lenient to me and should go very close here.
3.05 1m MAC Fuels & General Supplies Fillies Maiden (3yo+)
John Queally has already had a winner at Killarney this week with Djingle in the Novice Chase and he could be successful with his stablestar GETAWAY KATIE MAI. Her bumper form was very strong when successful under Jamie Codd. She was a bitterly disappointing last time out when she was favourite at Killarney. She looks solid each way value here if she can get back to form. Many of the opposition have had a number of runs and they look exposed. She looks a very big price if she can get back to something like her bumper form. The trip may be on the short side but she will be staying on when the others have cried enough.
3.40 1m6f Behans Horseshoe Bar, Restaurant & Townhouse Accomodation Handicap (3yo+)
ROYAL ILLUSION looks to have a very strong chance here with Colin Keane aboard for the first time since her flat debut. She had two solid runs in handicap company in most recent times when fourth in the Ladies Derby at the Curragh and then finishing seventh to Great White Shark in a Premier Handicap at Galway. This race doesn’t look as strong as either of those she has contested and it will be very hard to keep her out of the frame. She has been dropped a pound by the handicapper and I would expect her to go very close.
4.15 1m6f Listowel Races Supporters Club Failte Abhaile (Q.R.) Race (4yo+)
SAGLAWY hasn’t been seen on the flat for 858 days and it is very interesting that Willie Mullins has set his sights on this race. Willie has won the last two renewals of this race and Saglawy will be extremely hard to beat based on his hurdles form last season. In December last year he finished 20 lengths third to the ill fated Espoir D’Allen who went on to win the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. I would suggest looking at the distance betting for this race because Patrick Mullins will set off in front or close to the face and it could be a facile win as he was a very smart juvenile hurdler.
4.50 2m Ladbrokes Ireland Listowel Handicap Hurdle (Grade B) (5yo+)
Tony Martin is double handed in this race and it looks potentially interesting that owner John Breslin has both of them. GOLDEN SPEAR looks to have a very solid chance having crept in at the bottom of the weights with Chris Timmons claiming five pound off his back. He had a very good prep run for this when third to Davids Charm at Killarney and that should leave him spot on here. He was only beaten six lengths in the Galway Hurdle and that looks enough to put him in contention here. Massive each way value.
5.25 3m Devon Inn Hotel Handicap Hurdle (4yo+)
WEST COAST TIME has gone into my notebook on numerous occasions and he should be very fit and ready here after contending a charity race at Cork in the last ten days where he ran on late. He was third to Brazos in maiden at the course two years ago so it looks like he handles the track at least. His hurdle form is a bit in and out but I think this race may have been in the pipeline for a while and he looks like a good value bet to me here. He steps up in trip to three miles and he should be dropped out the back and put to sleep and then come with a late run. In a trappy enough contest he looks like the each way value.
5.55 2m6f Kevin McManus Beginners Chase (4yo+)
The Gordon Elliott team are having a bit of a quiet spell at the minute but MINELLAFORDOLLARS could change that here with question marks over many of the opposition. He had a couple of chase runs earlier in the year and has been given time off since them. He comes here a fresh horse and that could play to his advantage. The two horses that are above him in the market have chinks in their armour and Minellafordollars looks to have less to prove. No doubt he will be shorter in price close to the race so I would keep a close eye on the market as that will tell us all.
