Will Reilly look ahead to another superb week of horse racing, which features the ‘King George’ at Ascot

This week’s racing in Ireland and Britain is listed below. Ireland is listed first.

As on overview, there are two Group races and a Listed Race at Leopardstown on Thursday, a Listed Race at Naas on Wednesday and a Listed Race at Down Royal on Friday. The inimitable  Galway Festival begins on Monday 29 July.

In Britain, the main meeting is Ascot (Fri and Sat), with Saturday’s card featuring the £1.25million Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which looks set to be one of the races of the season. The market is headed by dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner, and this season Group 1 Eclipse Stakes heroine, Enable.

There is also Listed action at Sandown on Thursday, York on Friday and Pontefract on Sunday. York’s Saturday card features the Group 2 Sky Bet Stakes, while Ascot’s Saturday card carries, in total, over £1.5million in prize-money. The £150,000 Moët & Chandon International Stakes (Heritage Handicap) on the card looks sure to be a popular betting heat.

The five-day ‘Glorious Goodwood’ Festival will begin on Tuesday July 30.

Tuesday 23 July

Ballinrobe, 6pm – A National Hunt card made up of six hurdle races and a bumper. The feature race is the €22,000 John Mulhern Handicap Hurdle

Wednesday 23 July

Naas, 5:50pm – A flat card that features the €60,000 Yeomanstown Stakes (Listed Race, 6f, 7:25pm)


Thursday 24 July

Leopardstown, 5:50pm – A flat card that features the following races:

  • €60,000 Group 3 Jockey Club Of Turkey Silver Flash Stakes (7f, 6:55pm)
  • €60,000 Group 3 Japan Racing Association Tyros Stakes (7f, 7:30pm)
  • €50,000 Kingdom Of Bahrain Vinnie Roe Stakes (Listed Race, 14f, 8:30pm)


Limerick, 5:40pm – A National Hunt card consisting of six hurdle races and a bumper


Friday 26 July

Down Royal, 5:35pm – A flat card that features the €50,000 Her Majesty’s Plate (Listed Race, 7:35pm)

Wexford, 5:50pm – A National Hunt card


Saturday 27 July

Gowran Park, 1:25pm – A flat card that begins with a €24,000 7f fillies’ maiden race for two-year-olds


Sunday 28 July

No racing in Ireland as the seven-day summer highlight, the Galway Festival, begins on Monday 29 July (first race 1:20pm) and features the €120,000 Connacht Hotel (QR) Handicap (2m179y, 7:40pm)


Britain – the key races this week


Thursday 25 July

Sandown, 1:45pm – A card that features a £30,000 Listed Race for fillies (2:15pm) and a £30,000 14f handicap (2:50pm)


Friday 26 July

Ascot, 1:50pm – Day one of the two-day King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes meeting at the track; the card includes:

  • A £20,000 2yo maiden (2:25pm)
  • £30,000 Brown Jack Handicap (3pm)
  • £60,000 Listed Race for fillies and mares (3:35pm)
  • £30,000 12f handicap (4:10pm)
  • £45,000 5f handicap (4:45pm)

York, 6pm – A flat card that features a 10f £50,000 Listed Race for fillies (7:30pm); no race on the card is worth less than £15,000


Saturday 27 July

Newcastle, 1:40pm – A flat card that features the £25,000 7f ‘Beeswing’ Handicap (2:45pm)

Ascot, 1:50pm – Over £1.5million in prize-money is on offer on a card that features the £1.25million Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (3:40pm)

Also on the card:

£150,000 Moët & Chandon International Stakes (handicap, 7f, 3pm), the £50,000 Group 3 Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes, which opens the card, the £45,000 Porsche Handicap (one mile, 2:25pm) and the £30,000 Wooldridge Group Pat Eddery Stakes (Listed Race, 4:15pm, 7f)



Chester, 2pm – A flat card that includes two £19,000 handicaps

York, 2:05pm – A flat card that carries £260,400 in prize-money and contains the following races:

  • A £50,000 6f handicap (2:40pm)
  • £120,000 Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes (10f, 3:15pm)


Newmarket, 2:15pm – A flat card that features a £45,000 6f handicap (4pm) and a £20,000 7f fillies’ handicap (3:25pm)


Sunday 28 July

Uttoxeter, 2pm – A National Hunt card that features a £22,500 2m4f handicap chase (3:35pm)

Pontefract, 2:20pm – A flat card that features the £50,000 Pomfret Stakes (a Listed Race, one mile, 3:55pm)
