Alan Marron looks forward to the Irish racing highlight this week – Thursday’s Leopardstown card

5.45 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden (Plus 10 Race)

An above average fillies maiden to start the card and it could be very interesting that Aidan O’Brien unleashes BLISSFUL  here as she has some really strong breeding lines being by Galileo and out of Massarra that the Coolmore team will know quite well.

She could be one to follow for the season ahead so one to note should she not be successful here.

6.20 Leopardstown Golf Centre Rated Race (3yo)

WESTERN DAWN is the standout contender in this race based on the form he showed last time out when beating Sonaiyla at Naas to break his maiden duck.

Sonaiyla has gone on to win herself next time out so the form has some substance to it.

The step up in trip is sure to suit considering he was staying on strongly towards the end of his race last time out. Jim Bolger should be able to improve him another bit and he should be very hard to beat here.

6.50 Holden Plant Rentals Glencairn Stakes (Listed Race) (3yo+)

For anyone who followed the Curragh previews over Guinneas weekend would have seen that I was very sweet on the chances of YULONG GOLD FAIRY. She disappointed on that run but I will give her another chance to redeem herself considering that the run prior to that was full of promise.

Dermot Weld is applying cheekpieces and that could really help her in terms of concentration. She is obviously a little idle through her races. On ratings she has a bit to find with Flight Risk but should be the value selection in this race.

7.25 “Ham Sandwich” Handicap (3yo+ 50-80)

TREBLE CONE landed a nice touch for his owners over course and distance back on 17th May and he returns here off a nice weight to give them another day in the sun. (or rain).

His run last time at the Curragh was respectable and he has a very nice pull in the weights with Mutadawwel who reopposes and beat him a nose.

He gets a 5lb turnaround in the weights this time and the softer ground should be no issue to him whatsoever. This is a competitive handicap but he could be a decent price to return to the winners’ enclosure.

7.55 King George V Cup (Listed Race) (3yo)

EMINENT AUTHORITY could prove to be the value here in a very select three runner field. He was very impressive winning in Killarney first time out even though he didn’t handle the track at numerous stages throughout the race.

He looks like a big long striding individual who will take time to grow into his frame but could get the run of the race here if it turns out to be somewhat tactical.

The opposition look like they could be there for the taking and this horse could turn out to be an exciting recruit for the Joseph O Brien team and win a decent pot.

8.30 Awards & Gifts Apprentice Handicap (4yo+)

HURRICANE SKY has plenty of course form to his name and even though he is slightly getting on in years he could prove to be a value alternative in this competitive handicap.

Many of the runners are dual purpose perfomers so getting a strong gauge on the form isn’t easy. He won this race last year off a mark of 67 and now returns off 70.

That is well within his grasp and I can see him running on into a place at a course he loves. Value each way selection.

9.00 Leopardstown Members Handicap (3yo 45-70)

This race is a bit of a minefield but a horse that has been in my notebook for a long time returns here.

JERED MADDOX is in my notebook from 1st February when he was very unlucky not to break his maiden.

He runs here in first time blinkers off a mark 6lb lower and I can see him being really competitive. He looks like the type who is idle at home so the blinkers could really perk him up. Could be a nice double figure price to end the night on a positive note.
