Finals Night – Thursday May 23, The O2 Arena, London –
The 2019 Premier League season began on Thursday 7th February, with 17 nights of top-class action from then till now. It all comes down to a fascinating climax at The O2 in London on Thursday night May 23rd.
The four players left in contention for the title are defending champion and World No.1 Michael van Gerwen who is looking for his fifth Premier League title, and finished top of the league for a record seventh successive year by defeating Mensur Suljovic in the final round of league games in Leeds last week.
Daryl Gurney who has beaten MVG in both league games in which they’ve met this season and he makes his play-off debut in London this week. The quartet also include 2018 World Champion Rob Cross, who came so close to finishing top of the league table in this season’s tournament and 2009 Premier League winner James Wade.
The play-off schedule for Thursday night in London is as follows:
Michael van Gerwen v Daryl Gurney
Rob Cross v James Wade
Michael van Gerwen/ Daryl Gurney v Rob Cross /James Wade
Thursday May 23rd (The format is now Best of 19 legs)
(7:15pm) Michael van Gerwen v Daryl Gurney
Michael van Gerwen will be looking to avenge his Premier League double defeats to his opponent Daryl Gurney in this semi-final. The World No.1 has been in and out of his usual high standard of form in this season’s league.
He did still however manage to take top-spot off Rob Cross on the final night of league action in Leeds last week.
Daryl Gurney comes into finals night in fantastic form and finished off his best ever Premier League campaign with an impressive 8-3 win over Michael Smith in Leeds. And having beaten MVG in both league fixtures this year he will be full of confidence as he bids to reach his first ever Premier League final.
This will be a high-quality match with both players confident of getting the win and we the spectators should be treated to an epic tungsten tussle.
I’m going for the World No.1 Michael van Gerwen to win convincingly however and enhance his chance of winning a fifth Premier League title in the process.
Prediction – Michael van Gerwen to do the hat-trick (Most 180’s, Highest Checkout and win the match) at 9/4
(8pm) Rob Cross v James Wade
The 2018 World Champion Rob Cross has had a fantastic Premier League campaign coming into tonight’s play-off action and probably should have finished top of the table. The reason he didn’t was because he lost his final league game in Leeds last Thursday, and that was to his opponent here James Wade, who beat him 8-6.
James Wade has also had a very good league campaign and apart from his win over Rob Cross last week, he also had a win and a draw against Michael van Gerwen among his fantastic run in the tournament.
This one will be a high-standard and very close affair with both players very evenly matched if turning-up on top-form, and again we the spectators are in for a treat.
As I’m expecting a very closely fought encounter, at the prices it has to be James Wade to get the win and enhance his chances of a second Premier League title.
Prediction – James Wade to win at 7/5
An outright win bet on James Wade to win the tournament at 7/1 is advised. Please note this will have to be placed before the semi-final action begins on Thursday evening.
