Shamrock Rovers v Cork City, LOI

High flying Shamrock Rovers take on Cork City on Friday at Tallaght Stadium - Image

John Curtis looks forward to the meeting of Shamrock Rovers and Cork City at Tallaght Stadium, FRI 24 May, 8pm

Shamrock Rovers are going into this game on the back of two wins on the spin, beating Finn Harps 3-0 and UCD 1-0 in the two games.

Rovers will be happy to get back to winning ways after a shock defeat against Sligo on the 4th of May.

They have only lost one home game this season and that was at the hands of bitter rivals Bohemians. This has been key to Stephen Bradley’s men this season.

Rovers will be happy with how the season has gone so far, apart from some slips ups along the way to the likes of Bohs, Sligo, and Dundalk but all an all a great season to date.

Cork are going into this game with a win on Monday night against UCD in a hard fought 1-0 win in the UCD Bowl.

The worrying thing for Cork is the lack of consistency in their team this season which has seen changes to managerial team with John Caulfield not being in charge of the Leesiders anymore.

Cork will be delighted to have taken the 3 points vs UCD after suffering a defeat to Dundalk in Turners Cross in the game previous. Cork’s away form this season hasn’t been great losing five away from home already; this isn’t helping their league position this season whatsoever.

That being said, the win on Monday gone against UCD was much needed ahead of Friday night.

The Match:

This game earlier in the season saw Shamrock Rovers run out 3-1 winners in Turners Cross, goals coming from Sean Kavanagh and Aaron McEneff on the double for The Hoops.

Kavanagh’s lead goal can be viewed below.

Generally when these teams meet each other there tends to be a lack of goals. Both teams have been equally as good at the back over the last number of years.

This campaign Cork have been leaking goals left, right, and centre and don’t look as sturdy at the back as they did over the last number of seasons.

Rovers are flowing freely when it comes to goals.

I can see this match being a slow burner before busting into life. Rovers look too strong on paper for Cork this season and the positions in the league shows why they’re a team to be feared.

Bradley will have his team well drilled going into this game and won’t let the Cork lads get into their heads like they can without teams.

I saw Cork live last weekend and they just look like a team that are in decline at the moment with a lack of cutting edge in their team.

They’ll be hoping for a bit of good fortune when they travel to Tallaght this Friday night where they will be looking to get any sort of result that’ll give their fans something to cheer about. But for me I think Rovers are going to be far too strong for this Cork team.

I’m going to go with a home win on Friday night, Rovers are playing some stuff at home this season with Tallaght being somewhat of a fortress to go and get a result.

It’s a hard place to get a result when your firing at all cylinders but when your firing below par like Cork are then it’s certainly going to be hard for them.

I know their does be a lack of goals when these teams meet apart from the odd game here and there when there does be goals galore.

I think Rovers will be coming out to make a big statement on the league even more so on Friday.

Cork will be set up well but you’d have to feel that Rovers will have enough in them to break down the Cork defence.
