The 2019 Premier League Darts
Night 15 – Thursday May 09, The FlyDSA Arena, Sheffield –
The 2019 Premier League season began on Thursday Feb 07th, with 17 nights of top-class action running from February to May. The season includes Judgement night after nine weeks of action, where the bottom two players in the league table will be eliminated and it all comes to a fascinating climax from The O2 in London on Thursday May 23rd.
The players taking part in this year’s Premier League are Michael van Gerwen, Michael Smith, Peter Wright, Rob Cross, James Wade, Raymond van Barneveld, Gerwyn Price, Daryl Gurney and Mensur Suljovic. Gary Anderson has unfortunately withdrawn from the Premier League as he continues to struggle with a back injury.
The PDC decided that nine different players would replace Gary Anderson at each of the nine different venues on each of the first nine weeks of action.
The replacements are as follows – Chris Dobey (Newcastle, Week 1) – Glen Durrant (Glasgow, Week 2) – Steve Lennon (Dublin, Week 3) – Luke Humphries (Exeter, Week 4) – John Henderson (Aberdeen, Week 5) – Nathan Aspinall (Nottingham, Week 6) – Max Hopp (Berlin, Week 7) – Dimitri van den Bergh (Rotterdam Ahoy, Week 8, Night 1) – Jeffrey de Zwaan (Rotterdam Ahoy, Week 8, Night 2)
Following the double header in Rotterdam, Raymond van Barneveld has been eliminated from what was his final Premier League before he retires at the end of the year.
Night 14 results (Manchester):
Rob Cross 8-1 Michael Smith
Peter Wright 6-8 Mensur Suljovic
Daryl Gurney 8-5 Michael van Gerwen
James Wade 8-4 Gerwyn Price
Thursday May 09th (Best of 14 legs)
(7:15pm) Michael Smith v James Wade
Prediction – James Wade at 11/10
Having reached the World Championship final, it hasn’t been a great year for Michael Smith and he was again way off his usual high level of form in Manchester last week as he was soundly beaten 8-1 by Rob Cross. On the other hand, James Wade has been playing very well this season and currently sits third in the table following an 8-4 win over Gerwyn Price last Thursday, a game where his opponent refused a handshake afterwords for some reason. On current form it has to be a James Wade win in this game for me.
(8pm) Mensur Suljovic v Rob Cross
Prediction – Rob Cross at 4/5
Mensur Suljovic currently sits in fourth place in the league table, the final play-off spot after he ground out a battling 8-6 win over Peter Wright last week. Rob Cross has been playing to a very high level throughout the league campaign and also on the floor tournaments and currently finds himself top of the table in this competition. Mensur will not go down without a fight but I feel Rob Cross will have too much for him on this occasion and should consolidate his top spot position.
(8:40pm) Daryl Gurney v Gerwyn Price
Prediction – Daryl Gurney at 13/10
Both players need a win to keep their play-off chances alive and this should be a feisty affair between these two. Daryl defeated the World No.1 MVG last week to do the double over him in this year’s league, which proves his current form is just where he would want it to be at this stage of the competition. Gerwyn Price was below par in Manchester as he lost out 8-4 to James Wade and for some reason refused to shake hands with his opponent after the game. I’m expecting Daryl Gurney to handle the pressure of this game better and therefore take the much needed win.
(9:20pm) Michael van Gerwen v Peter Wright
Prediction – Michael van Gerwen at 3/10
Despite losing for the second-time this league campaign to Daryl Gurney last week, Michael van Gerwen still sits pretty in second place in the league table and will be hoping that Rob Cross slips-up against Mensur Suljovic and he wins this game to claim top-spot. He comes here in good form having won the Austrian Masters on the European Tour last weekend. Peter Wright lost his must win game against Mensur Suljovic last week which means he now can’t qualify for the play-off stages of this year’s tournament. So a routine win is expected for Michael van Gerwen.
