Mark Williams defends the World Snooker Championship at a price

Alan Marron picks out a value selection for the 2019 edition of the World Snooker Championship from the Crucible Theatre. Sheffield

“Lets Get The Boys On The Baize”

The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield plays host for the World Snooker Championship and has been doing so since 1977.

It takes place from 20th April to 6th May 2019. It will be the 20th and final ranking event of the season.

Mark Williams is the defending champion having defeated John Higgins 18-16 in the 2018 final.

The tournament will be broadcast by the BBC and Eurosport.

The top sixteen seeds automatically qualify for the main competition. Mark Williams will be seeded first whilst other seeds are allocated based on world rankings after the China Open.

The total purse for the event is over 2 million for the first time with the winner being awarded £500,000.

  • First Round: Best of 19 Frames
  • Second Round: Best of 25 Frames
  • Quarter Finals: Best of 25 Frames
  • Semi Finals: Best of 33 Frames
  • Final: Best of 35 Frames

With the draw now made Ronnie O Sullivan the antepost favourite for the tournament will face James Cahill, the first amateur to qualify for the World Championship.

In this preview we will look at a value pick against the “Rocket”.

Mark Williams

The value selection for me for this event is last year’s winner Mark Williams with the way the draw has gone.

He has a potentially nice route to the semi-final.

His toughest match on route to the semi-final will be Kyren Wilson if it plays out that way.

His form this year has been a bit in and out but he comes alive at the Crucible.

To be on the opposite side of the draw to Ronnie O Sullivan could be a major advantage.

At a double figure price he appeals to me as a likely contender to give us a good run for our money.

Another advantage is that he is further on in his career than many of the younger players so his ability to handle the pressure may come to the forefront as each match is over a longer distance.

Mark Williams to win Quarter 1 at 15/8

A 147 to happen at any stage in the tournament at 6/5
