The 2019 Premier League Darts

Night 12 – Thursday April 18, Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff –

The 2019 Premier League season began on Thursday Feb 07th, with 17 nights of top-class action running from February to May. The season included Judgement night after nine weeks of action, where the bottom two players in the league table were eliminated and it all comes to a fascinating climax from The O2 in London on Thursday May 23rd.

The players taking part in this year’s Premier League are Michael van Gerwen, Michael Smith, Peter Wright, Rob Cross, James Wade, Raymond van Barneveld, Gerwyn Price, Daryl Gurney and Mensur Suljovic. Gary Anderson unfortunately withdrew from the Premier League as he continues to struggle with a back injury.

The PDC decided that nine different players would replace Gary Anderson at each of the nine different venues on each of the first nine weeks of action.

The replacements are as follows – Chris Dobey (Newcastle, Week 1) – Glen Durrant (Glasgow, Week 2) – Steve Lennon (Dublin, Week 3) – Luke Humphries (Exeter, Week 4) – John Henderson (Aberdeen, Week 5) – Nathan Aspinall (Nottingham, Week 6) – Max Hopp (Berlin, Week 7) – Dimitri van den Bergh (Rotterdam Ahoy, Week 8, Night 1) – Jeffrey de Zwaan (Rotterdam Ahoy, Week 8, Night 2)

Following the double header in Rotterdam, Raymond van Barneveld has been eliminated from what was his final Premier League before he retires at the end of the year.

Night 11 results (Liverpool):

Rob Cross 8-5 Peter Wright

Gerwyn Price 8-5 Mensur Suljovic

James Wade 7-7 Daryl Gurney

Michael van Gerwen 8-3 Michael Smith

Thursday April 018th (The format is now slightly longer at Best of 14 legs)

(7:15pm) Mensur Suljovic v Daryl Gurney

Prediction – Daryl Gurney at 5/4

Mensur Suljovic was on the wrong end of an 8-5 scoreline in Liverpool last week against Gerwyn Price, whilst Daryl Gurney played out a very entertaining 7-7 draw with James Wade. Both players sit on 12 points in the Premier League table, and on current form it’s a Daryl Gurney win in this for me.

(8pm) Rob Cross v Michael van Gerwen

Prediction – Michael van Gerwen at 11/20

First against second in the Premier League face each other in this eagerly awaited contest, with Rob Cross just one point ahead of the world number one MVG. Both players come into this game having only lost two of their 11 games played. On current form this one should go all the way, but it’s an important win for Michael van Gerwen advised.

(8:40pm) Michael Smith v Gerwyn Price

Prediction – Michael Smith at 5/4

Michael Smith has been below par for a number of weeks in the Premier League now, a comment that he has openly admitted to himself, whilst Gerwyn Price has been producing up and down performances, but on a whole Price has been the more consistent performer. On these grounds it should be logical to side with the Welshman (Price), however following two good performances in last weekend’s Players Championships in Barnsley (Final and semi-final, losing to James Wade in both), I’m going for a Michael Smith win in this match.

(9:20pm) Peter Wright v James Wade

Prediction – James Wade at 13/10

Peter Wright has been below form in this year’s Premier League compared to his usual consistent performances and can’t quite put his finger on why this is. He lost 8-5 to league leader Rob Cross in Liverpool last week and faces James Wade who won both Players Championships in Barnsley last weekend, and has been in terrific form this year, stats and comments that have to back-up a confident vote for the win in this league contest.
