Just shy of €100,000 in prize money is up for grabs on the seven-race card at Dundalk on Sunday. Will Reilly has brings his selections and betting break down.
With a run under his belt, for which he was sent off as favourite, Captain Corcoran looks poised to go well. The most-interesting of the newcomers is Fozzy Stack’s American Lady, who is by top-class sprinter Starspanglesbanner, while Silent Look ran well when third here on her debut and is entitled to build on that performance.
Aughavannon and Allhallowtide have interesting pedigrees so watch the betting for clues.
Selection: Captain Corcoran
Mistress Of Venice finished fourth at Royal Ascot in 2017. She returned from a long break to finish third at Navan on March 30th and, if turning up in the same form, looks set to go well. She will race wearing a tongue-tie for the first time today.
Aidan O’Brien’s Empire State, whose form is solid, also looks a likely contender. Being by Scat Daddy, he seems sure to like the Dundalk surface.
Fozzy Stack’s Nicaro must have been showing ability to be given a Listed Race-entry on his second start last year. He has five lengths to make up on Mistress Of Venice from Navan but, even so, looks set to go well.
Jessica Harrington’s Sneaky Snooze, a debutante, has an interesting pedigree so check the betting for clues.
Selection: Empire State, with the drop to five furlongs being a slight concern
An interesting race, in which the question is, which ones have developed the most from last year?
Burmese Waltz and Mid Winster weren’t disgraced in Listed contests last season, while Nitro Boost also wasn’t disgraced at that level. Empire Line was beaten three-parts of a length by the progressive Beau Warrior here last time and should go well, while Annabelle Rock comes here in great heart and from a stable that has had a great year. She will, however, need to keep the improvement coming in order to win today.
Selection: If the market vibes are solid enough, Burmese Waltz
If you can forgive her latest run, Smile Ahead has to be given some thought dropping back in trip. Ferretti showed plenty of promise last season and ran well enough on his seasonal return last time so will arrive here fit and sharp. He’s a son of War Front, whose progeny seem to love the surface here.
Succeedandsurpass is the interesting newcomer so watch the betting for clues.
Construct could be very interesting this season, so keep an eye on him. Political Policy will be primed to run well for his owner, Frank Lynch, who sponsors on the card. Miss Snossyboots arrives here in good heart, although an eight-pound rise in the rating for a good win last time means she’ll have to step up again, which is entirely possible.
Georgian Bay arrives here in good heart, Alhajjaj’s rating looks workable, as does Waterboy’s, while Rockfish isn’t done with winning yet, based on his Leopardstown run last time. Also, he will be racing in cheek-pieces for the first time today.
All in all, it’s an interesting handicap.
Selection: Rockfish, who could have a nice target to aim at in Miss Snossyboots, who likes to race from the front.
Dreamboat Dave ran well at Navan on his seasonal return and looks poised to go well again. Serenely was well behind Dreamboat Dave at Navan but might fare better back here. She was just behind Lyrical Attraction here on March 15th and both step up in trip today. Hidden Spark finished fifth in the Navan race referred to and may be open to some improvement (will race in a visor for the first time).
Esprit de Lumiere, a half-brother to Irish 1,000 Guineas winner, Just The Judge, is interesting on breeding but will need to improve on form shown so far. He will be racing in blinkers for the first time today.
These look to be the key players, although there are a couple of potential improvers in the race as they step up to this trip for the first time.
Selection: Dreamboat Dave, whose form sets the benchmark for the others to aim at.
The most-competitive race on the card and you could build a case for a number of the runners. These include hat-trick seeking Wild Shot. He arrives here in good heart.
As mentioned, though, you could build a case for quite a few.
